Most of us have enough common sense to not flush diapers or plastic bags down the toilet. That said, most of us are guilty of flushing something down the toilet that should not be flushed. But you may be guilty TODAY because, somewhere along the line things got fuzzy on the whole “What is OK to flush down the toilet?” thing. This is not your fault because many of the wipe products out there look confusingly similar.
If we lived in simpler times (think the 1950’s), there were only a few different types of wipe products and therefore, proper disposal was far more obvious. But in 2016, things aren’t that simple. There are more than 55 different types of these little squares running around in the marketplace, and more than 50 of them are not made to go through the plumbing.
FACT: Do you know that facial tissue is not flushable? Nope. They are coated or infused with ingredients that keep them from breaking apart when blowing your nose.
“MY WIPES SAY THEY ARE FLUSHABLE.”
I’m surprised by this as much as you. Think twice about relying on a manufacture’s flush claims that have not been independently lab tested. Any wipe manufacturer can make a flush claim because there is NO REQUIREMENT to have their flush claims put to the test by an independently accredited lab.
…So who came up with those flush claims printed on the wipes box sitting behind your toilet?? Chances are those claims came from Jimmy in “Marketing”, rather than a scientist from an independently accredited lab.
Truth is there are only a handful of suppliers of such flushable products, in the world. The rest have no business making unsubstantiated flush claims.
The article below shows what can happen when products are not tested by an independently accredited lab:
“OK, …SO WHICH WIPES ARE ACTUALLY FLUSHABLE?”
It is not all gloom and doom out there. As I said, there are a handful of reputable wipe manufacturers that have actually demonstrated the scientific capability to produce a wipe that is engineered to be both, safe to flush and safe for our environment.
USE THIS ONE TIP to save your pipes and septic systems, our municipal wastewater treatment facilities and our environment:
#1 – Be sure to use only Tidymates® flushable wipes which are independently tested and are scientifically proven to disperse 3X faster than leading national brands of flushable wipes. See for yourself – video link
OTHER IMPORTANT TIPS TO KNOW:
#2 – Follow the disposal recommendations on packaging. Flushable baby wipes do not exist (baby wipes are too big to be flushed, no matter what they are made from).
#3 – Look on packaging for language that states something like “Independently tested in scope by an accredited lab to conform INDA/EDANA flushability guidelines.” If this language is missing, we would not suggest flushing it.
#4 – Ask your wipe supplier for the independent lab test data of their “flush” claims. If the details of the document are not made available, we would not suggest flushing it.
#5 – “WHEN IN DOUBT, JUST THROW IT OUT.”
In Part 2 of this Blog we will look more closely into the current state of the hundreds of thousands of miles (literally) of aging waterway infrastructure running below our feet. …You’ll be shocked!
